My first taste of the traditional 9 to 5, all because I panicked about my pension. At first I was excited. But it didn’t take long before the walls started closing in. I had spent years supporting others, guiding, healing, navigating trauma. And suddenly, I was reporting to a system that didn’t understand humans. Twelve hour days. No breaks. Unpaid overtime.

When grief and a bad endometriosis flare hit, HR responded with a meeting. Not compassion. That quiet exhaustion, running on empty, it feels invisible until it isn’t. I’ve lived with endometriosis since I was young. ADHD means I move fast and feel deeply. Endometriosis, my unwanted lifelong passenger. ADHD, the reason I can’t do boring. Combined, I was running on fumes.

I tried to convince myself into something more acceptable because that is what the system rewards. But a cage, no matter how “well” paid, is still a cage. As hard as it was, I’m grateful because it led me here, to a career that honours energy, a business that protects time, and a life where presence matters more than productivity.
